Diocese RE guidance updated 2023
RE Scheme of Work – Additional Needs
This document offers guidance for the teaching of Religious Education to pupils with a
dditional needs. It is based on the Lichfield Diocese Scheme of Work and uses a question-based approach. It provides a range of activities which could be selected to meet the needs of pupils. It recognises the need for over learning so a number of suggestions are made for activities to meet the objectives. This will enable teachers to select appropriate activities and re-visit concepts with additional activities based on the pupils’ needs. This guidance sets out the following:
- Exemplar units for teaching Christianity
- Exemplar units for teaching other faiths and generic topics

Big Questions
The purpose of this particular session is to explore, through a series of activities based around big questions, what it means to have hope and where that hope may be found.
It will explore hope from a believer’s point of view, from the student’s own world view and through the expression of hope that can be found in some works of art.
Additional film clips are also included below.
Inspire – Big Questions Year 4
Inspire – Big Questions Year 6
Inspire – Big Questions Year 8
The film below can be used with Year 4 and 6 of the ‘Big Questions’ lessons as an example of a modern day Good Samaritan – bringing hope to others:
The film below can be used alongside Big Questions – year 8 and looks at one person’s story of what motivated him to become a person of hope when faced with the injustice of poverty.
Courageous Advocacy
The purpose of this unit is to explore ways that we can provide future hope for ourselves, others and the planet that we share.
This will be done by looking at both the fair trade alongside the chocolate and clothing industries

Pilgrimage – A journey of hope
This pack offers a range of activities linked to the theme of Christian Pilgrimage. Teachers have the option of using the activities in sequence or offering them in ‘carousel’ form to the pupils.
The activities may provide a starting point for larger projects and the theme lends itself to becoming part of a transition project, as pupils move to the next year group or to a new school.
Finding hope in the spiritual
The mental health and wellbeing: Towards a whole school approach, highlights that the exploration of spirituality can offer real benefits for mental health.
This Inspire session aims to take a cross-curricular approach to spiritual development using Kathryn Wright’s Sacred Pathway’s model. This inclusive approach to spiritual development can be found in the Spiritual Development – Interpretations of spiritual development in the classroom.
Throughout this set of four activities, opportunities are provided for pupils to encounter and reflect on spiritual thinking, through the use of questions posed in the Rickett Girds Progression in Spirituality. Kind thanks is expressed to Salisbury diocese for making these freely available.
